Do you know where your credit card number is?

Hello again.

This past Christmas, a popular website called Stratfor (which offers geostrategic forecasting services) was the victim of a major hacking attack. The attackers made off with megabytes of email addresses and more importantly, credit card numbers. They then proceeded to post the data in an online pastebin for all to exploit.

This event offers some lessons. First and foremost, the company committed the Cardinal Sin of web development by storing the credit card…

PIZZA WIZARD: a business plan for success

Hi all,

A few weeks ago, I posted a request for a venture capitalist to pitch an idea to. I thought I found someone, but I never heard back.

Nowadays I have more than enough work and hobbies, and more ever on the horizon. So, I'm going to do the unthinkable, and post the plan here for all to consume; lock, stock, and barrel.

THE PLAN:

In a nutshell, the plan is to produce a proprietary version of the popular online pizza ordering tool which has helped…

Understanding web graphic formats

Hi all,

I thought I would take a few minutes and give you guys a brief primer on how to choose the correct format to display an image on the Web. I see a lot of incorrect usage out there, even among large corporations, and the result is often an aesthetically displeasing mess.

There are fundamentally two different types of graphics: vector and raster. For this blog post we are concerned with the latter.

Raster graphics are *pixmaps*. That is, they…

Where's Christine? A Personal Update

Hi everyone,

So, where's Christine gone, some of you have asked (and... thank you! it's good to be missed), so I thought I would send a personal update. When I founded WiredSonoma with Chip almost 3 years ago, we had a vision for what it might become, and much of that has happened- many good connections have been made,  businesses have been started, and a lot of excellent information has been shared- plus all kinds of events from lectures and debates and classes to book signings…

There's no excuse not accept debit/credit cards

Just a friendly reminder:

Literally anyone with a bank account can now accept debit cards, using PayPal, or even a swiper which attaches to your iPhone.

If you don't accept credit cards, then you arguably deserve to go out of business.

Come along on my service trip to Namibia

I'll leave you all behind for 10 weeks as I go off to teach little orphaned children in Namibia. Below is a link to a video made a couple of years ago of Mary Beth Gallagher, with whom I will be working. Perhaps some of you had the good fortune to meet this amazing woman when she spoke at the Rotary meeting last October.

I'm investing several hundreds of dollars in specialized teaching materials in Compassionate Communication for children and adults and if any of you would enjoy…

We Will Not Be Assimilated: an appeal to put away your phone

The TV show Star Trek is famous for depicting fantastic technologies which eventually became realized. Some of these were welcome, but others should give us pause.

One of the deadliest foes in the series were The Borg. You may not be immediately familiar with the name, but you are almost certainly familiar with "resistance is futile", and "you will be assimilated" which have entered our lexicon.

These pour souls started out as individuals like you and I, but became consumed… Continue

The next big thing is...

Arduino.

What's Arduino?

It's a *high level* embedded programming framework.

What do we mean by "high level"?

If you've seen James Cameron's "Titanic", then you might not have noticed one of the more interesting things about the vintage giant cruise liner: the manual lever which the Captain uses to control the ship. This ship, arguably the most complex machine ever built at the time, had millions of individual parts. But they…

North Bay get its own web design conference

After many years of traveling to conferences, and getting to know many of the talented designers and developers in the north bay, I decided to help create the North Bay Web Design Conference.

For this inaugural event, we're keeping it to one day: Tuesday, April 12. It's going to be at the event center at Sonoma Mountain Village in Rohnert Park. And to be as inclusive as possible, we've kept the price to $99.

We're currently putting together the agenda and welcome proposals to…

An open letter to those who would game FourSquare

This is an open letter to VinoPinot (aka VinoP):

I need to reach out to you as your behavior on FourSquare is having a negative impact on the FourSquare community. I've heard 4 people complain about your checkins and your timing could not be worse. Yesterday, I presented to the annual board meeting of the Sonoma Valley Visitor's Bureau regarding the…

Virgin Launches iPad-only Magazine

Today Richard Branson's Virgin empire launched a new iPad-only magazine called Project. I downloaded the app and purchased issue 1 for $2.99. After a slow and interrupted download, I was able to view the issue.

I wasn't sure what to expect as I didn't like that I had to download…
