Wired Sonoma

Advancing the understanding and utilization of technology in Sonoma Valley.

Got my hands on an iPad today, and must say it exceeds my expectations.

Yes, it is a large iPod Touch.  And that's a good thing, as the iPod Touch is a very useful instrument.

Where the money is, I think, is in App development for the professional market.  Consider the usefulness for the consultant, or retailer, or contractor, who, with the right App, could create invoices, check SKUs, or lookup availability of products with the virtually instant-on, single purpose model that the iPad/App can deliver.

Yes, the Touch or iPhone can do that too but the large format of the IPad makes it easier and less error-prone.

Sure, it has other uses, for Mom to see her emails and such.  But for the businessperson-in-the-field, I see huge promise.

All that, and it feels better than it shows.  Back up the truck on AAPL.

Sam, add me to the list of people who will be pre-ordering an iPad tomorrow. However, I will not be ordering the 3G version. I'm just tired of AT&T's lousy service in Sonoma. I already pay for data on my iPhone and pay another plan for a USB-based AirCard for 3G data access when I don't have a WiFi signal. Now AT&T wants me to buy yet another 3G plan for an iPad.

I think it's indefensible they won't offer tethering!

So, instead of buy a 3G iPad, I'm buying a WiFi iPad and Verizon MiFi unit that will provide data service to my iPhone, MacBookPro and iPad (even simultaneously) and I can share the access with my wife and daughter when we travel.

For me, iPad and MiFi is a winning combination that bypasses the annoyances of AT&T.
I just started a MiFiPad page on Facebook. No need for people to throw more money away for internet access.
I'm a huge MiFi fan. It's been the perfect (albeit expensive) solution for all those clients in places here that aren't serviced by ATT DSL or Comcast Broadband. That, and I think you're combo is the right choice, at least until (if) ATT Wireless ever delivers as so heavily promised and promoted.

Glad to see your sense of outrage (which I share) in how we've let the "utilities" walk all over us!
Just pre-ordered my Wifi-only iPad. Apple promises to have it here on April 3. Looking forward to using it with the Verizon MiFi.
MacRumors is reporting on a linked memo from Verizon that they are "Viewing iPad as Opportunity to Push MiFi Service".
